Getting It Straight: What to Expect When Visiting a Chiropractor for the First Time

Chiropractic Treatment

There are some people who are afraid of dentists and doctors. Some are scared of going to the hospital, hearing the sound of the dentist drill, and even simply seeing an injection syringe. A lot of people are also scared of the unknown especially when they are about to undergo a major operation or surgery for the first time.

That same feeling also applies when you are about to visit a chiropractor. In many cities, there is at least one chiropractor available to cater to your medical needs. There is always that common denominator when going to a visit to a dentist, a doctor, and a chiropractor: pain.

People are afraid of going to the dentist or undergoing an operation because of the possibility of pain during the procedure. It is the same feeling as planning to go to a chiropractor for the first time. However, there should be no reason to be scared of a chiropractor. In fact, going to a chiropractor is a better and less invasive alternative to treat back pains and aching joints.

What to Expect

A lot of first-time visitors do not know what to expect on their first chiropractic appointment. That is why it is a good idea to know what usually happens during a chiropractor visit. If you have already heard about a chiropractor, you already know that they pop or crack your bones to make you feel better.

Sure, the thought of popping and cracking your bones can make you feel uncomfortable – even scared. However, you should not be. In fact, chiropractors are well-trained in that field to help align your spine, loosen your joints and feel a lot better than ever.

Before the bone-cracking session itself, the chiropractor will take your medical history and make you take a physical examination. The chiropractor will then determine a diagnosis based on the series of tests. Based on the diagnosis, the chiropractor will then decide whether a chiropractic procedure is a right treatment for you.

If you are qualified for treatment, expect to lie down on a treatment table. The chiropractor will then take the specific part of the body that is supposed to be treated and adjust it to its maximum range. Among common parts of the body that is often treatment include the back, neck, and knees.

The Sound of Relief

You can expect to hear a cracking or popping sound just like when you crack your own knuckles. There should not be a feeling of pain during the treatment and should make you feel a lot better after that. The chiropractor may also give you other treatment such as a muscle massage or heat or ice compress after.

It is also important to follow your chiropractor’s advice following the treatment. You may have to take supplements or change your diet for better results. Make sure to also comply with the follow-up visits depending on the chiropractor’s recommendation.

These are the things you can expect in chiropractic treatment. It can be scary especially if it is your first time, but you should not be. In fact, it can be a better and less-invasive alternative to help manage your body pains instead of taking medications.
